Johannesburg and Surrounds:

Johannesburg also Know as Egoli( place of Gold) is the largest and most populous city in South Africa. It is also the provincial capital of Gauteng and has the wealthiest and the largest economy in South Africa.

Johannesburg is served by O.R. Tambo International Airport which is the largest and busiest in Africa.

To the south of Johannesburg is the township of Soweto –a beacon to times gone by with remainders of an era that is best forgotten.  Soweto boasts the only street in the world that is home to two Nobel Peace Prize winners, Nelson Mandela and Desmond Tutu.

Soweto is home also to Baragwaneth Hospital, the largest hospital in Africa.

Nearby to Soweto is Gold Reef City, a recreation of the old gold miner’s village of Johannesburg over 100 years ago. It has a casino for the adults and an amusement park for the Kids.

 Only 45 minutes from Johannesburg is Maropeng, which, is situated in the Cradle of Humankind, - dedicated to Science and the evolution of man.

The world famous Sterkfontein Caves which are a world heritage site are situated near Maropeng,

Also within an hour is Hartebeespoort Dam, a weekend getaway where Johannesburgers own homes on the waters edge and enjoy the many water sports. 

Other recreational offerings available in the area are Glen Afric and the Elephant Sanctuary where you can walk among the elephants, canoeing down the Crocodile river, visits to Dewildt Cheetah Sanctuary – a haven to getting endangered animals back to there numbers, Cable car rides where you can enjoy the views over the dam and see the hang gliders go past you.
